As you might be aware, the foundation is the rock of your home. Your house is literally supported by it, and if there are problems with this element, they ought to be dealt with promptly. Most of these problems could appear benign to the average eye but could indicate severe underlying issues. Other signs aren't even near the foundation and may lead you to believe all is well. So, how do you make sure your home keeps standing? This article sums up some of the warning signs to look out for.

Exterior Cracks

Exterior cracks could be a way of your foundation screaming "help" in all the languages. While you need not worry about fine, small cracks on your steps or exterior walls, large exterior cracks with a zig-zag pattern should make you worry. Also, ensure you look out for protruding or cracked bricks.

Interior Sheetrock Cracks

If you notice that the interior sheetrock cracks with a zig-zag pattern that runs along your wall's height, you should be worried. Disrupted wallpaper also warrants a call to your contractor, not to mention cracks at the point where the ceiling meets the wall.

Out-of-Square Doors and Uneven Floors

Although it is common for homes to change after some years of settling, out-of-square doors with cracked walls above them are extreme. You should call a contractor to have a look before the situation gets out of hand.

In some cases, your floors may become uneven. To establish if this is the case, spill some water on them and see how it rolls. If the water rolls in one direction, it could indicate possible problems with the foundation.

Separation of Door or Window Frames From Brick

Another common warning sign is shifting of door or window frames from brick walls. If you notice this, your foundation requires serious attention.

Rotten Wood (Beams and Piers)

Rotten wood in beams and piers could signify several bad things, and a bad foundation is one of them. It could indicate any of the following:

  • Too high humidity in the basement or crawlspace
  • Possible flooding
  • Attack by carpenter ants or termites

Either way, rotten wood in these parts is bad news.

Tile Cracks

Although tiles that are fired at high temperatures are characterized by high strength, they are also brittle. There could be many reasons behind the cracks in your space but ensure to check the condition of your foundation first.
